Jefferson, New Hampshire

Named for Thomas Jefferson the first land grants in the Jefferson area were made in 1765, but the location was so deep in unexplored territory that few settlers took up their claims. Colonel Joseph Whipple took a grant and cut trails through the forests to build a "manor" house. He named the town "Dartmouth" after William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth, the patron of Dartmouth College. Brother to William Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Colonel Whipple renamed the town "Jefferson" four years prior to Thomas Jefferson's election as president. The state legislature granted the town a new charter as "Jefferson" in 1796.
Jefferson is located in Coos County ( Photos), New Hampshire (Photos). Coos County Cities and Towns. The country was incorporated December 24, 1803. Coös County pronounced co-ash with two syllables. Coös County got it's name from the Coo-ash-auke Indians, whose name means "Dwellers in the pine tree country." Coos is an Indian word meaning "crooked", for a bend in the Connecticut River. The White Mountains are a mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine. Part of the northern Appalachian Mountains, they are the most rugged mountains in New England. The range is heavily visited due to its proximity to Boston and (to a lesser extent) New York City. Most of the area is public land, including the White Mountain National Forest as well as a number of state parks. Its most famous peak is Mount Washington, which at 6,288 feet (1,917 m) is the highest mountain in the Northeastern U.S. and home to the fastest surface wind gust (231 miles per hour (372 km/h), over 100 m/s, in 1934) measured in the Northern Hemisphere. Photos Mount Washington is one of a line of summits called the Presidential Range, many of which are named after U.S. presidents and other prominent Americans.
In the past few years, thousands of acres of Jefferson have been sold or donated by private interests to the White Mountain National Forest. These include the Randolph Town Forest, a part of which is within the boundaries of Jefferson and Mount Starr King.
