Named for Thomas Jefferson the first land grants in the Jefferson area were made in 1765, but the location was so deep in unexplored territory that few settlers took up their claims. Colonel Joseph Whipple took a grant and cut trails through the forests to build a "manor" house. He named the town "Dartmouth" after William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth, the patron of Dartmouth College. Brother to William Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Colonel Whipple renamed the town "Jefferson" four years prior to Thomas Jefferson's election as president. The state legislature granted the town a new charter as "Jefferson" in 1796.

Jefferson lends itself to many hiking, skiing and snowmobile trails. Set amid the quiet farms and forests of northern New Hampshire and the grandeur of the White Mountains. Jefferson is a paradise of fresh air and incredible scenery. The Waumbek Country Club, built in 1895, is the oldest 18-hole golf course in New Hampshire and is open to the public. No matter the season, there's plenty of fun to be had in and around town, from hiking, skiing and quiet paddles along local lakes and rivers to thrilling rides via snowmobile, dogsled, or roller coaster. Parts of Jefferson are included in The White Mountain National Forest and the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge YouTube. The area's natural beauty and outdoor opportunities are unmatched. There are several hotels and inns in town, along with many camping options. The population was 1,107 at the 2010 census. It is home to two theme parks: Santa's Village and Six Gun City.

The White Mountains are a mountain range covering about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire and a small portion of western Maine. Part of the northern Appalachian Mountains, they are the most rugged mountains in New England. The range is heavily visited due to its proximity to Boston and (to a lesser extent) New York City. Most of the area is public land, including the White Mountain National Forest as well as a number of state parks. Its most famous peak is Mount Washington, which at 6,288 feet (1,917 m) is the highest mountain in the Northeastern U.S. and home to the fastest surface wind gust (231 miles per hour (372 km/h), over 100 m/s, in 1934) measured in the Northern Hemisphere. In the past few years, thousands of acres of Jefferson have been sold or donated by private interests to the White Mountain National Forest. These include the Randolph Town Forest, a part of which is within the boundaries of Jefferson and Mount Starr King.
